What do you need to be happy?
I recently visited the Tosh Village of Himachal Pradesh. Vaguely connected to any major city, this village doesn’t have many resources to count for, the network connectivity isn’t that strong either. I stopped in for a cup of morning tea where I met these two young beauties. Their clothes were shredded, their mother ran a small shop while these two were playing outside. But they carried something which isn’t very common these days. They had this natural, raw smile which many of us can’t put up even after achieving a lot in life. This got me thinking,
What do we really need to be happy?
Is it a good job, a beautiful family, a fancy car or a big apartment? When I was in college, my thinking wasn’t that far-fetched. Apparently, good marks were all I needed to be happy. Or maybe I was wrong. With time, I started getting better marks but my thirst for it increased even more. By the final semester, I had been convinced that a good job is all that takes to be happy. Once you get placed, you would have money and you could enjoy the life you want to. But again, they were all wrong. For us, money doesn’t matter, It’s the surplus money that matter. Because no matter how much we earn, there would be something we cant buy and how can we possibly happy about it? The same goes for car, family, and apartments. There would always be a thirst for better and bigger.
Does that mean we can never be happy?
Of course not! Look at these two girls. They absolutely need nothing to smile like a gem. And that’s what we should strive towards as well. Be happy with nothing or nothing can make you happy. Look at what you are today. You have come a long way from what you were yesterday. You have struggled, you have worked hard to become the person you are today. Embrace it for a moment. Of course, you have a long way to go, of course, you can still achieve a lot in life but that doesn’t mean you stop being proud of what you are today. And kids explain us this simple lesson so firmly. They hardly understand anything, they too want to have a lot of chocolates, chips, and games but do they stress over it for more than a minute? If they don’t get what they want, they immediately switch their goal to something else.
For them, it’s all about enjoying the moment rather than stressing over what they don’t have. So, relax, take a deep breath for a moment and be thankful for what you have today. You never know what’s coming next, why waste your time stressing over it. Live in every moment and embrace every detail of what has made you. Constantly tell yourself, “I am happy the way I am. I need to fulfill a lot of dreams but that wouldn’t stop me from being happy today”.
